John Iglar is an immigrant to Portugal who is passionate about promoting and preserving its prehistoric heritage. He started Prehistoric Portugal to help educate the general public about the incredible wealth of prehistoric sites throughout the country as well as the fascinating and laudable work that archaeologists are doing to discover and interpret Portugal’s prehistoric past.

John is not an archaeologist. He has been an educator all his life, teaching students of all ages a variety of subjects: history, mathematics, computer science, study skills, and more. He has brought that pedagogical background to this project, positioning himself as a mouthpiece for the archaeological sciences and trying to explain the complicated concepts and uncertainties of the analysis of millions of years of human history …as well as the fascinating elements of paleontology which are also active here in Portugal.
He has taken on the task of trying to visit as many prehistoric sites as possible throughout the country. (He’d like to say that his goal is to visit them all, but as he’s always finding more sites he knows that it may be an impossible task!) As he does so, he documents each site and publishes them here. Along the way, he is growing more and more amazed at the richness of this country and its ancient past. He has made connections with all kinds of people and organizations and has found the whole process to be incredibly fulfilling and educational.
