Prehistoric Portugal: documenting and promoting our ancient heritage
This website developed out of the recognition that available information about Portugal’s prehistory was significantly smaller than that of its history, particularly in English. The website was started by an individual with the aim to document as much as possible of Portugal’s prehistoric heritage and promote the understanding and appreciation of the sites which contained the lasting monuments to this heritage.
Starting out as a personal endeavour to visit and document sites and share information about each site, the scope has grown to include hiking and driving routes, as well as stories of archaeological discoveries and the history of Portuguese archaeology. The companion YouTube channel, as well as other social media platforms, has helped to increase the exposure of the website and the awareness of Portugal’s prehistoric heritage.
This growth has led to offers of collaboration. To guide this, a statement of the website’s purpose and goals, as well as guidelines for contributions was developed.
