Municipal Museum of Leonel Trindade

Just off the pleasant Jardim da Graça in central Torres Vedras stands the gorgeous convent of Nossa Senhora da Graça. Just to the right of the church and the clock tower, a large blue sign beckons you to visit the Museu Municipal Leonel Trindade. When you drag yourself away from the gorgeous courtyard, you enter the small but full museum featuring information and artefacts from thousands of years of the area’s history.

There is significant information about the Castro de Zambujal, a significant Copper Age settlement just a short way out of town. (When I visited in March 2025 there was an extensive exhibit covering the archaeological work on the Castro.) Models of its stages of construction and numerous artefacts are combined with detailed information (all of which is in Portuguese).

There are also exhibits of artefacts found from different sites, including the nearby Tholos do Barro.

Location

The museum is in the middle of the city of Torres Vedras, in the district of Lisbon. It’s in the building of the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Graça, right next to the Igreja da Graça (“Church of Grace”) in the same building. You access the church and the museum from entrances which lead out to the Jardim da Graça (“Garden of Grace”).

Admission

The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 10h00 to 13h00 and 14h00 to 18h00. Admission is normally €2 for adults, but is free on Sundays and various holidays. Details are on the museum’s page on the Torres Vedras website.

The museum is closed January 1, Tuesday and Sunday of Carnival, Easter Sunday, 1st of May, and Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
